Throughout a great deal of early Chinese history, a fallen leader
was buried with his horse. This practice continued for centuries;
however, instead of burying the actual horse, a sculpture of the
horse was placed in the tomb, thought to provide for
transportation in the afterlife. Early statues were often made of
bronze, stone, or painted terracotta. During the T'ang Dynasty
(608-907 A.D.), artisans produced detailed yet stylized glazed
ceramic statues of horses in tack.
