Emerson 1999 or so - 2010
Emerson, aka "Pie", came to be with me in December of 2002 from Rocky Spot Dalmatian Rescue, in Norman, OK. My good friend Gina had several of their dogs, and I
was quite impressed with them. So I wrote the director of the rescue a note, specifying what I'd like in a dog. Everyone here said that dog couldn't possibly exist., that I
was expecting too much. Surprise! Teresa Monnard matched me up with a scared and lonely Ichabod, who I renamed Emerson in honor of a favorite fictional character.
He met and exceeded my "wish list" for a companion. We enjoyed nearly 24/7 company as he was with me always, in the studio and traveling to see friends. A
degenerative spinal problem coupled with allergies to the medication took him from me on October 3.

Em was a fantastic ambassador for his breed. Very laid back and loyal. A one person dog... a true couch potato. Very well behaved, unless there were bakery items to
tempt him into thievery. One Thanksgiving, he ate almost an entire apple pie off the counter, hence his nickname "Pie".

Dalamatians are known for their unpredictable temperament. Careless overbreeding was the result of the popularity of the "101 Dalmatians" movies of the mid nineties.
Cute spotted circus dogs! Because they are so colorful and cute, many people think that they will be goofy friendly dogs. Not really! For centuries, Dalmatians have been
bred to be GUARD DOGS!

Dalmatians are not considered on of the current breeds of guard dogs  such as Rottweillers, German Shepards, and Dobermans; however, for hundreds of years
Dalmatians were the guardians of the coaches and horses of the wealthy. They would run ahead of, to the side of, and underneath the back carriage wheels. They would
be left to protect the horses and carriage while the owners ate and slept while traveling. In later years, Dalmatians were used to clear the streets to allow the passage of
horse-drawn fire engines, hence the term "Fire Dog".

Not the breed of dog for everyone, that is for sure. Emerson can never be replaced, but I have asked Teresa at Rocky Spot to keep an eye out for another dog with Em's
temperament. As long as it takes.
